Multimedia Reflection

The lesson plan I created for using multimedia was very interesting and fun. I used the ASSURE lesson plan model which made it uniform and simple to develop. I was nervous at first but the more I started working with the media and trial and error, the easier it was for me to comprehend. I have never put a multimedia lesson plan together and having the examples to model after also made it less stressful for me to organize. I was terrified at first but like my dad use to say, “You can’t learn if you don’t try.” I found the multimedia tools very intimidating at first and started off really slowly in the development of the lesson. I knew my topic and research the information that I mostly knew already, but putting it into a multimedia format was not as easy in the beginning as I thought it would be. Practice makes perfect and I got plenty of practice the first week trying to fix all the kinks and problems. The more I worked with the tools, the better I have became and the more confident I am with the media formatting that is needed to develop these unique lesson plans.
I’m not a person who is a computer whiz and I have become better since practicing with the tools I have had to utilize in my audiovisual class. I believe these tools and others are going to be very important in my future as a teacher. I only hope to get to utilize as much of these tools as I can. I definitely will develop my skills with the multimedia devices and I firmly believe that practice does make perfect so I don’t foresee and problems. The audiovisual class I believe is vital in developing a teacher who is capable of using technology in the classroom. I am proof of that. The tools taught and shone to us throughout the semester are useful and important. In today’s classroom, teachers need to be ahead of the game so to speak when it comes to teaching with technology, and developing multimedia lesson plans like the one in our class will help us to become these teachers. One tool that I learned and will be useful in future teaching is the Windows Movie Maker. Creating a movie was really cool and fun. This was part of the lesson that took the longest because after all the practice and finally getting what I wanted on the movie and recorded, the 7 megabyte movie was too big to load onto the website. I had to make it smaller which was okay because I still got the important facts across.
Using the computer to teach is also vital with today’s students who may be incapable of learning through conventional ways. We saw the move enabling dreams and watching that showed the importance of technology in the classroom. Using multimedia lesson plans will further advance the learning styles of all children weather they are disadvantaged or normal. Watching the technology in the movie made me aware of the importance knowing about certain tools and utilizing them with disadvantaged students can make a learner out of all children. I believe this is vital for allowing all kids a chance to excel in their education. I only hope I can utilize more tools in my future class and continue to develop into a technology teacher of the future.

Assessing Technology Tools

Multimedia Tools Rating
5 = Superb 3 - Average 1 = Poor

Moodle
The Moodle site was useful and very well organized. The icons were easily accessible. Going from one place to another ran smoothly for me. I was very impressed by the ease in which I could go to my assignments, check my grades and so forth. It was simple to utilize and I hope to use it in the future. I gave the site five thumbs up.

Google Gmail
I only heard about Gmail before and I never used it until our class. I always used yahoo mail and I think Gmail is so much better. I have more memory and the spam guard is superb. I don’t have any spam in my in box compared to yahoo where I always have a lot. I will continue to utilize this mailbox and recommend it to others. Five thumbs up!

Firefox
I was use to using the windows until I started using the Firefox site in class. I find it just as easy as windows but to me I haven’t used it enough to say it is that much better. I will try to utilize it more often in order to better assess the effectiveness of the site. I’ve only had three months using it compared to 15 years using the windows site. I give this site three thumbs up but will defer saying anything bad until after I have adequate time using.

Del.icio.us
The delicious bookmarks are another site that I will be utilizing in the future. I believe this is an excellent tool in order to remember sites that teachers utilize to help with their planning of lessons. To be able to locate a bookmark that you used to the previous year and other that you might now have use but two or three years earlier is great. You definitely don’t need to save all your web sites to your favorites any more. This gives you access to your favorites anywhere in the world! You can also use bookmarks from others that might be useful. This is definitely five thumbs up!

Yahoo Messenger
The yahoo messenger is a really cool site. I first used it when I was communicating when my team during one of the presentations. I was able to chat by typing, video and then video calling. It was easy to use. It was really funny seeing and talking to the person without having to type. I felt so important. It was a totally different way for me since I was always just emailing and never talked directly to the other person. It was my own conference call. I give this site five thumbs up definitely.

Google Blogger
The Gmail Blogger was a very interesting tool that I had never used before. Just like all the other tools this semester I used in class, this was fun and a superb way to utilize reflections from assignments that I will use with my students in the future. I found it easy to do. The directions were simple enough that if I could set it up, anyone could. I will definitely use this with class for students to upload their reflections and so forth just like we did. I give this site four thumbs up because of the uploading of images in posts somewhat difficult!

Weebly Website creation
This was another tool that I used for class that I was impressed. I never thought I could create my own web site for lesson planning until now. It was very interesting and the directions were easy to follow. It did take a while because I kept changing things over and over. I would definitely recommend using this site to others who want to create a web site in the future. The only negative is you can’t download any video over 7 megabytes and for that reason I gave it three thumbs up!

Windows Movie Maker
This program was very interesting to use for me since I am not a computer whiz and I have never try anything like this. It took me a while but I finally was able to create a short video for my multimedia lesson plan. After playing around with it I am impressed and if I can do this, anyone can! It was easy to use and simple to understand. I will only get better at it in the future. I give this site five thumbs up!!

Enabling Dreams

Assistive Technology: Enabling Dreams

“Technology is a lifeline for the disabled students in today’s classroom.” That’s what I heard and understood from the video “Enabling Dreams.” Students who have disabilities have continued to lag behind other non-disabled students. Some student’s with handicap problems need to use technology. Being able to progress in their education and move on with a career after college is not that possible without technology that is available in today’s world. The video stated that all assistive technology that helps the student’s who can’t move their limbs or talk has progressed at the same rate as computers, cell phones and other equipment have. These tools for learning have kept up with this highly developed technology.
For one girl named Suzanna who referees soccer matches the assistive technology has enabled her to pursue her degree at the University of Washington. For another student named Lucas, this advance technology has enabled him to play in concert bands and created the access for him to pursue his passion. I believe if technology has helped in enabling these dreams of so many students with disabilities, we as a society need to make sure this is available for all who need it. The problem with most educational areas is where the money is going to come from. I don’t think this is cheap, but I also feel us as a society, we need to make this technology available to all, regardless of income, color, demographic area or race.
Assistive technology is available and we should make it happen so other kids can progress and adapt to the changing times. Watching a child communicate with his eyebrows is amazing. This makes me feel a since of urgency in wanting to help make this type of technology available to others. I believe we as a culture need to educate as many politicians and school districts in try to help other handicap children have the same chance that I am sure only the rich well-off students have presently in regards to assistive technology. Let every child have a chance to become someone and make their dreams come true. Hard work and effort may not be enough, so every child who needs it should get assistive technology. Programs like DO-IT are helping but more needs to be done.

Reflecting on creating a lesson plan on Spreadsheet

The lesson plan I created with the ASSURE lesson plan model was very interesting and took me a while to comprehend. I can’t imagine how it would have been if I had not used the model in developing my lesson. Having the ability to follow the steps of the ASSURE model made it easier for me to fill in the blanks “so to speak” then trying to arrange it all by myself without any help. I found the steps very easily and it cut my time in developing it tenfold. I have never put together a lesson plan from scratch and having the model helped me avoid the migraine that I felt I would get when I first heard of the lesson.
I have always considered that trying to develop a lesson plan would not be too hard but after entering the teaching program at the university, I began to believe that it would be harder than I thought. After learning about the ASSURE model I began to feel a little better and started working on my lesson about creating a digital spreadsheet on comparing the voting changes in the 1990 and 2000 United States elections. I first found the website with all the voting information I needed at http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/voting.html (United States Census Bureau: Housing and Household Economic Statistics Division, 2008). Using the ASSURE model made it easier to began and to make changes without any problems. Being able to evaluate and revise the lesson as you proceed and to be flexible with each class being taught make the teachers job a lot easier too. I find myself saying the word easy a lot in this reflection about my ASSURE lesson plan.
Being organized I believe is vital in teaching. If students feel you as an educator are unorganized or messy then that’s the way they will perceive you always and their work will

Linder, Marvin
reflect the same attributes as yours. Respect will probably be a little low too. You have to be organized and sharp especially when first impressions or lasting ones. Using the ASSURE
model will make all your lessons complete, revisable, and identical in the way they are presented. This will also be a huge positive when it comes to having a substitute take over your class for a day or two. Continuity is vital in teaching a class and it makes your job and the student’s job flow completely in unison.
The steps are all important and all make perfectly sense in the organization in creating the lesson plan. The model starts off by Analyzing Learners before the objective which helps you as a teacher to always first look at your students before creating the lesson. There are areas for identifying the special need student and anyone else that may be different in your class. The ASSURE model is without a doubt one of the best teaching tools that a new education major like myself needs and will follow throughout my career.
